Dorothy International 2026 Autumn Auction Highlight – Mountains Across the Scroll: Yun Shouping’s Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers

Tim Editor, 10/10/2026

As preparations continue for the Dorothy International 2026 Autumn Auction, a selection of important works of art is gradually entering the spotlight. Among them, Yun Shouping’s Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers, an impressive ink handscroll, stands out for its expansive composition, refined brushwork, and classical vision of Chinese landscape painting.

Yun Shouping (1633–1690), also known as Nantian, was a leading artist of the early Qing dynasty. Celebrated for his elegant boneless flower paintings, he was also accomplished in landscape painting. This handscroll unfolds horizontally, presenting a continuous world of mountains and valleys. Layered peaks, rugged rocks, pine trees, riverbanks, open water, and distant mountains extend across the composition, creating a strong sense of depth and movement.

A closer view reveals careful attention to the structure of the mountains. Foreground rocks are defined by clear ink outlines, textured strokes, and rhythmic lines. Peaks in the middle ground rise and overlap at different heights, while distant mountains gradually become lighter and more open. Pine trees follow the contours of the slopes, their spreading branches contrasting with the vertical forms of the peaks and adding rhythm to the landscape.

Empty space is equally important. Open areas between valleys, riverbanks, and distant peaks allow the densely worked scenery to breathe. This balance between fullness and emptiness gives the scroll a natural visual rhythm and guides the viewer through the landscape.

Rather than relying on brilliant colors, the work builds its character through ink, line, and texture. The warm tone of the paper contrasts with the darker brushwork, emphasizing the contours of mountains, rocks, and trees. From a distance, the scroll conveys the grandeur of countless peaks stretching across a vast landscape. Viewed closely, it reveals intricate rock textures, carefully rendered pine branches, and subtle variations in ink.

The inscription Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers appears at one end of the scroll, while inscriptions and seals can be seen at the other, forming part of the complete visual structure of the handscroll.

The traditional Chinese handscroll offers a distinctive viewing experience. The entire landscape is not revealed at once. As the scroll gradually unfolds, mountains rise and recede, connected by forests, riverbanks, and open spaces. The viewer’s eye moves from one section to another, creating the sensation of traveling through an unfolding world of mountains and rivers.

This combination of monumental scale and delicate detail gives Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers its compelling presence. From afar, it presents the grandeur of an expansive landscape; up close, it invites appreciation of individual brushstrokes, textures, trees, and rock formations.

As a highlighted work of the Dorothy International 2026 Autumn Auction, Yun Shouping’s Ten Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers brings the enduring beauty of classical Chinese landscape painting into the contemporary collecting world. Through professional research, presentation, market promotion, and collector outreach, Dorothy International continues to introduce important works of art to a wider international audience.
